I of course ignored all of those people and ended up getting a Focus ST. Headroom, yo!
Found an ST1, which means decent Ford seats instead of way-too-narrow-for-me Recaros, but unfortunately also means none of the features. None of them.
If Oppo is interested, I'll give my impressions once I've had a chance to drive it a bit more.

Thank you for getting the Focus ST and not the FiST, although I still would have gone WRX. Either way, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! She looks great in red.
(patiently waits for my house to be burnt down because of the FiST comment)

I really wanted to like it, but... I literally did not fit. Seat all the way down, my head still banged into the roof.

I know a bunch of people had that issue with the 500 Abarth, although I'm 6'1" and I fit fine. That would definitely deter me from buying any car though. As long as you're psyched about the ST, that's all that matters. I would be! And I think Oppo would definitely be interested in impressions.

I'm 5'10", but so much of my height is in my torso. Sitting, I look more like 6'5"

I read your comment about the miata, that you are very tall, seems like a reason of weigh to have rejected the WRX. Also that you prefer the looks of the Ford.

Apparently people are too! How tall ARE you anyway?

Yup, that makes sense. A lot of my height is in my legs so I don't usually have a headroom problem. I probably could've just fit a helmet in a non-sunroof Abarth. God I wish I got that car... I will forever regret it.

See I'm all legs so I fit in most things once I get my seat in a comfortable position. 6'2"

Glad I'm not the only one with this problem. Scooting a seat forward so your legs can reach only to have your head scratching at the headliner makes for interesting driving positions.

I have a feeling the nav system would not be. Nor the heated seats.

I know how you feel. I have a ton of customers who are little 4ft tall Asian ladies in base model C-classes who have their seats all the way up and forward. You don't always notice until you're in the car, then your left shoulder is touching the ceiling and your head is through the sunroof.

Spent quite a lot of time in an E46 M3 a few years back... they're nice, but they're hardly the sports car jesus. In fact, when they came out everyone bitched about how heavy and numb the car was.

You got any mods planned? Maybe a tune or an LSD?

you can definitely get a DIN adaptor and put a nav in, you won't get sync, but in my experience that's a good thing.
a cursory google search says you can also get heated seat retro fitting kits for like 50$ assuming you want to keep your current buckets

I really wanted a nice G35/37S or Nismo 350z but it was tough finding clean Infinitis and harder to find Nismo Z's in my area so I added the M3 to my list and test drove a shitty one. That beat to shit rustbucket M3 changed my entire view on the E46 M3 and showed me just how nice the car was compared to a G or Z. I never got to test drive a ST or FRS/BRZ and would like to at some point soon just for comparisons sake.

Eh, I have my phone for that. Mostly it's the heated seats and upgraded stereo. The nature of the FoST's dash means I very much doubt it's possible to install an aftermarket head unit.
TheOnelectronic

Wait seriously? You can swap in a DIN standard head unit? I can't even imagine how...
TheOnelectronic
> SonorousSpeedJoe
11/03/2014 at 23:59 | 0 |
Unlikely. Apart from noise mods (intake/exhaust) I've never felt like aftermarket mods were really "worth it."
Time and experience may dictate an LSD, but for now It seems to work fine.

Yeah, the Focus ST is plenty capable out of the box, especially compared to my NA Focus.
I suppose an LSD isn't necessary if you're not tracking it, but a Quaife or Wavetrac unit might be if you track it often enough. I'll admit that my opinion is based more on hearsay than on intuition, as I've neither modded nor tracked my car.

Sincerely, wrx owner.
Ps. Retrofitting heated seats is really easy or you can find someone to do it for you for very cheap.

Insanely jealous because you see in Canada we don't get the ST1 our "base" ST is the same as your ST2 and it starts at 30K. Like you I hate the Recaros but here I can't get it without which means no ST for me. I would love the lower priced ST1 you get all the go without needing all the gadgets that I don't really care for.

well, I just checked out my prefered car audio source, crutchfield, and it looks like there isn't an adaptor for your car, yet at least, so I was wrong.
Is the dash layout shared with the base foci? if it is there's a good chance an adaptor will get made sooner or later.
my old ford has the bubble radio hvac unit they used in the late 90's- early 00's they make an adaptor bubble plate that you installed the factory hvac controls into and had a DIN radio mount.

You might have to wait a bit, but couldn't you just source used parts from the higher trim level Focus ST? Though, swapping in a different stock radio/nav might be trickier than the typical aftermarket install. Still, they can't be that different.

I very nearly bought a G37S manual sedan before I test drove and ended up buying my E90 M3. I spent significantly more on my M3, but I would have had significantly more regrets had I bought the Infiniti... It's just a whole 'nother level of performance and engagement.

It always makes me chuckle when people buy a specific car "because they're too tall". Tall people always get everything before short people so it's one of those rare occurrences when being short pays off. I always found the NA Miata very adequate when it came to room. And I fit into everything with ease. One sole exception was an original Lotus Elan which I got to sit in once. I fit ok but it made the Miata feel like a bus.
For the record, I own a WRX which has tons of room everywhere. I have a friend who's 6'1 and fits just fine into his. You have to be in 6'7 range to have issues. And no, I wouldn't touch a Focus. WRX is just so much more car.

You see, though, I'm 5' 10", it's just that almost all of that is in my torso. That means I get to bang my head on the majority of cars AND have trouble reaching the pedals.
